LEGO® Robotics Camp 2016 (Advanced)

The Advanced Robotics STEAM Class is aimed at optomizing the autonomous robot with sensor input and savvy programming. The classes are 1:00 to 3:30 PM, with the room available until 4:00 PM for clean-up and extended practice time. Each program will be saved and can be used later for navigating the FIRST LEGO® field. These modules are similar in concept to the modules that professional programmers use.

Monday, June 20th - Sensors: Learn to use the touch sensor, the ultasonic sensor, and the infrared sensors to detect obstacles and maneuver a basic obstacle course with an autonomous robot! Programming adds new modules for students, and students learn to test sensors and improve position of sensors for optimal feedback.

Tuesday, June 21st - Color sensors and gyroscopic sensors: Learn to detect color, reflected light intensity ,and ambient light intensity. The gyroscopic sensor is used to measure angles (how far the robot turns); this sensor requires a bit more consideration, and fine-tuning, but could be highly useful to careful programmers.

Wednesday, June 22nd - Robotic attachments: Learn how to make robotic arms, grabbing fingers, and dumping buckets, with motors, gears, and more. The robots will practice picking up and moving objects. Books with examples are provided, but creativity is explored and shared. Students will watch some cool LEGO® robots from video, seeing some amazing designs!

Thursday, June 23rd - Teams will practice line following on and 8'x4' LEGO® Field with obstacles! Line following programs vary in sophistication, but basically the robot uses a color sensor to detect a line, then turns some angle to intersect the line again, using the distance between turns to measure the optimal angle of the next turn, and so forth. Once the program is in place, the teams can put together their skills on all sensors to navigate a "field", move objects, topple towers, sweep the field clear, pick up objects, and perhaps shoot a ball!
